W is for… Wapaloosie
The Wapaloosie is a lumberwoods critter something like a squirrel, but with woodpecker feet and a distinctly caterpillarish way of climbing trees. Even dead and skinned, the wapaloosie’s climbing instincts never depart. It is also among the fearsome critters immortalized in song here!
Bob: Sorry but we have to cook something else tonight
Jenkins: Why?
Bob: The meat went up a tree
Jenkins: I don’t understand
Bob: I SAID THE MEAT WENT UP A DAMN TREE!!!

Has anybody else own, or even just read, Dougal Dixon’s speculative evolution book titled After Man? This thing reminds me of the tree dwelling Chirits.

YES! I always wondered if the chirit was inspired by it!

An absolutely magnificent book, I’m sure you agree. Did you have any particular favourite species? I always had a soft spot for the Truteals. Those small light grey burrowing rodents with vestigial eyes, trumpet shaped ears and those alien-looking elongated incisors that resembled pointed beaks.
Oh, and Surfbats. Can’t forget those!

I love truteals! They’re definitely up there. I also like the gigantelopes and the predator rats, lots of diversity in both.
